Confirming that the fire-rated wall assembly is described consistently in the architectural drawing, the corresponding Division 07 spec section, and the manufacturer’s submission data requires the user to consider and remember the similarities and differences among the three different documents.

One of the more unexpected findings in this type of comparison is how often the various documents for the same project are inconsistent with one another. A drawing might show one fire rating, the spec section might specify a slightly different or more detailed requirement, and a submitted product’s actual tested rating might not perfectly match either; three documents that all seem individually reasonable but don’t fully align once compared side by side.

Manual multi-document comparison across a large project’s full document set is realistically not something a person can do exhaustively within normal review time, simply given the sheer number of possible combinations across hundreds of drawing sheets, a lengthy spec book, and an ongoing stream of submittals which is why this specific kind of cross-referencing is one of the higher-value use cases for AI-assisted document review, provided a qualified reviewer still confirms any flagged discrepancy before acting on it.

An efficient method for prioritising the use of limited time for manual multi-document comparisons is to begin with life-safety-adjacent assemblies, egress widths, structural connections, and fire ratings, where a three-way mismatch is potentially the most important to find. This is often more efficient than a limited-time review of every possible combination of documents across the full set.

In multi-document comparisons, version control is the easiest to miss. Drawing-versus-specification version comparisons create the appearance of a complete comparison when, in fact, they compare documents from different versions. It is good practice, and cannot be done enough, to ensure that all documents being compared are the latest versions. Failing to do this is a quiet undervaluing of the care taken in the rest of the multi-document comparison process.

Multi-document comparison is the process of checking consistency across more than two related construction documents simultaneously, for example, a drawing sheet, its governing spec section, and a related submittal, rather than the simpler task of comparing just two versions of the same document.
