Architectural drawings are the drawing set an architect produces to communicate what a building is meant to be – layout, dimensions, materials, how it’s supposed to look and work for the people using it. Every other discipline on the project ends up coordinating against this set eventually, one way or another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They’re one piece of a bigger document package that covers structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing drawings, plus specs. The split in emphasis is pretty clean, honestly. The other sets describe how a building gets built and how it performs. The architectural set describes what it actually is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A standard set of requirements tends to be repetitive. Examples include floor plan layouts, describing dimensions, including wall and door locations, and sizes, and showing relationships of spaces. Elevations provide sideview of the building with a description of the height, material of the facade, and placement of doors and windows. Sections, cutting vertically through the building to show floor-to-floor relationships. Details, zooming into specific conditions like a wall assembly or a stair connection, at a scale big enough to actually build from. And schedules, rounding it all out with tables of doors, windows, finishes, room by room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ceiling coordination is a practical way to see why any of this matters day to day. A mechanical contractor routing ductwork needs the finished ceiling height and any soffits shown on the architectural reflected ceiling plan before locking in a route. If the mechanical drawings and that ceiling plan disagree – say, a duct is routed at a height the architectural set already shows as taken up by a soffit – that’s exactly the kind of conflict a coordination review is supposed to catch. It traces straight back to two drawing sets not agreeing with each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A lot rides downstream of this set. Scope of work, trade coordination, submittal requirements, even how a schedule gets sequenced. A missing dimension or a vague detail on one architectural sheet usually doesn’t cause a problem right away, either. By the time it surfaces, it often become a field conflict or unexpected change order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
