It’s the umbrella concept under which more specific terms like cross-trade coordination and joint trade coordination fall.

Coordination happens simultaneously at several distinct layers in a real project. There’s spatial coordination to resolve physical conflicts, such as ductwork crossing structural steel. There’s contractual coordination, ensuring every trade’s scope combines to cover the full project without gaps or redundant overlap. And there’s sequencing coordination, making sure trades access shared spaces in an order that actually works given each one’s installation requirements and dependencies on the others.

Most weekly coordination meetings on an MEP-dense project spend the bulk of their time on the spatial layer, simply because clash detection software makes that category of conflict highly visible and quantifiable in a way the other layers aren’t automatically flagged for. Contractual and sequencing coordination issues tend to surface more through manual review and experienced judgment, since there’s no equivalent automated tool that reliably catches every scope gap or sequencing conflict the way a BIM clash report catches spatial ones.

Trade coordination quality correlates strongly with overall project outcome in ways that are somewhat hard to quantify precisely but are widely recognized across the industry. Projects with genuinely strong coordination tend to run fewer field disputes, less rework, and tighter final cost variance than comparable projects where coordination was treated as a formality rather than a serious, ongoing discipline.

A useful mental model for evaluating overall trade coordination health on a project: strong coordination doesn’t mean an absence of conflicts, since conflicts are a normal and expected part of any project with real complexity it means conflicts get caught and resolved efficiently, before they cause meaningful cost or schedule damage, rather than surfacing late as expensive surprises that could reasonably have been caught much earlier in the process.

Coordination fatigue is worth acknowledging as a genuine phenomenon on long, complex projects. Over time, intensive weekly project meetings cause team members to lose their edge on addressing issues methodically, even if only due to laziness. This is something long-term projects/meetings must guard against more than short-term projects/meetings. This is because fatigue can build up during long meetings. After all, the meetings happen over a long period of time. Fatigue, however, is not as large a concern in short, quick meetings.

Trade coordination is the general term for aligning the work of multiple subcontractors on a project so their individual scopes fit together correctly spatially, sequentially, and contractually without conflict, gaps, or overlap.
