It&#8217;s the practical, hands-on cousin of clash detection: the software finds the clashes, but coordination is the human and procedural work of resolving them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The majority of complex MEP projects require weekly coordination meetings to facilitate the core of the process. Trade contractors bring their updated models, the meetings are led by the BIM Manager or VDC Coordinator who runs a clash report in Navisworks (or similar application) and helps the team resolve clashes. Who moves the duct? Who reroutes the conduit. Whether the structural engineer needs to punch a beam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The stakes are real. A typical hospital mechanical room has six design systems that will all conflict for the same ceiling cavity. One single conflict check may yield hundreds of clashes. Distinguishing important clashes from insignificant clashes such as a sprinkler head that technically invades a ceiling tile grid line by two inches is a matter of good judgment and can&#8217;t be very much automated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Common coordination sequence on a commercial project:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Structural steel and concrete locked first, since everything else routes around it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ductwork and large mechanical trunk lines coordinated next, given their size<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plumbing and fire protection layered in around ductwork<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Electrical and low-voltage systems fit into remaining space last<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where this connects to coordination intelligence capability is in what happens after the meeting ends. Traditionally, resolved clashes and their rationale lived in someone&#8217;s meeting notes or a spreadsheet that nobody opened again. A searchable coordination record means that six months later, when a superintendent asks why a duct routes the way it does, there&#8217;s an actual answer instead of a guess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Poor coordination doesn&#8217;t just cause field rework; it erodes trust between trades, and that friction tends to outlast the specific issue that caused it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Escalation paths matter once a clash can&#8217;t get resolved at the weekly meeting level, which happens more often than project schedules like to admit.
