Where a clash is a specific detected conflict, a coordination gap is the broader condition: a place where two pieces of information that should agree don’t.

These gaps show up in more forms than most people expect. There’s the classic physical clash: a duct and a beam occupying the same space. But there’s also the scope gap, where two subcontractors’ proposals both exclude the same piece of work, each assuming the other covers it. There’s the documentation gap, where a drawing shows one detail, and the spec describes something different for the same assembly. And there’s the sequencing gap, where two trades’ installation schedules conflict because neither team accounted for the other’s access needs in the same area.

Scope gaps between adjacent trades tend to be the most expensive kind to catch late, since by the time anyone notices, both subs have often already priced and are working from contracts that don’t include the gapped item, meaning someone has to absorb the cost of a change order for work that, in a perfect world, should have been included in someone’s original scope from the start.

Scope Gap Analysis AI approaches this from the specification and scope-of-work side specifically, cross-referencing trade proposals and contract documents to surface exclusion mismatches before they turn into field disputes, catching the who’s-responsible-for-this conversation in preconstruction rather than mid-installation, when the answer is far more expensive to sort out.

Not every coordination gap is a failure of process. Complex projects generate them naturally, simply because so many people are working from interrelated documents simultaneously; the measure of a good coordination process isn’t zero gaps, it’s how quickly and cheaply they get caught.

Not every coordination gap traces back to a single obvious cause, either. Sometimes a gap emerges because two disciplines’ design timelines simply didn’t overlap the way the project schedule assumed they would; one team finalized their drawings before the other team’s design was developed enough to coordinate against meaningfully, and by the time both are complete, reconciling them means reopening decisions that felt settled weeks earlier.

Worth remembering too: a coordination gap caught and resolved during design or preconstruction rarely makes it into anyone’s postmortem, precisely because it never became a problem, which means the visible track record of coordination gaps on any project systematically understates how many potential issues were actually caught before they mattered, a bias worth keeping in mind when evaluating how well a coordination process actually performed.

A coordination gap is a discrepancy between different construction documents, disciplines, or trade scopes that hasn’t yet been identified and resolved the underlying condition that clash detection and coordination meetings exist to find and close.
