An AI agent is a program that can look at information, work out what it means, and act on that by itself. Not just answer when you ask it something. Go do something with the answer, without being told to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And that’s the real dividing line in construction software right now, more than people give it credit for. Projects throw off a ridiculous amount of paperwork. Drawings, spec sections, RFIs, submittals, meeting notes, punch lists, all of it. For years, getting anything useful out of that pile meant a person sitting down and reading, page by page, trade by trade, whether they felt like it that day or not. An AI agent takes on some of that reading itself now. It can go compare documents, flag a mismatch, or put together a finished report, instead of just handing back an answer to whatever you asked it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Most AI features don’t really earn the word \u201cagent,\u201d if we’re being honest about it. A summarizer that spits out a paragraph when you paste in a document is still reactive \u2014 ask it something, it answers, done, end of story. An agent does more in one pass. Pulls data from wherever the project keeps it. Works out what that data means against a goal. Then produces something on the other end \u2014 a flagged item, an updated record, a next step nobody had to trigger by hand. Good ones take correction too. Tell one it missed something and it’s supposed to adjust next time, not just apologize and repeat the mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Here’s a case worth sitting with, because it’s not hypothetical. A 400-page spec binder lands for a new bid package. A junior engineer working through that by hand, flipping between drawing sheets and spec sections hunting for scope nobody’s claimed yet, can burn the better part of two days on it, easily. An agent runs the same material and comes back with a short list of unowned items in a matter of minutes. Somebody still has to look at that list and make the call. The agent just did the slow, boring part first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
People sometimes assume that’s basically a chatbot with a fancier name. It isn’t, not really. A chatbot answers and stops. An agent carries a task through several steps on its own, without getting re-prompted at each one. And having one in the workflow doesn’t mean cutting the person out of it, either \u2014 most construction AI agents exist to hand someone a shortlist, not to make the final call themselves.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
