Cross-trade coordination for fire protection requires particular care in ceiling cavities shared with mechanical and electrical systems and at wall penetrations in fire-rated assemblies, where an improperly fire-stopped penetration can compromise the entire rated wall’s performance even if every other aspect of the installation is correct.

Fire protection commissioning and testing carry their own regulatory weight distinct from ordinary system startup, since most jurisdictions require third-party inspection and testing of fire alarm and sprinkler systems before occupancy, with specific documented test results the authority having jurisdiction will review directly—meaning fire protection scope isn’t fully complete, in a practical sense, until that formal testing and sign-off has actually happened, regardless of how confident the installing contractor is in the work.

A detail worth flagging specifically: fire protection design often needs to be finalised and permitted through a separate deferred submittal process distinct from the main building permit, meaning fire protection can sometimes lag behind the rest of the project’s design approval timeline in a way other trades don’t experience—a scheduling nuance that catches teams off guard if they assume every trade’s permitting moves in lockstep.
